Sentence Length Visualizer

Chart sentence lengths across your writing to spot monotony and improve rhythm and flow.

How it works

This tool splits your text into individual sentences and counts the words in each one, then displays the results as a bar chart. This visual approach makes patterns in your writing immediately obvious.

  • Rhythm & variation: good writing mixes short and long sentences. If the chart shows bars of similar height in a row, your prose may feel monotonous to readers.
  • Variation score: the coefficient of variation (standard deviation divided by the mean, expressed as a percentage). Higher values indicate more sentence length diversity. Scores above 40% generally indicate strong variation.
  • Color coding: bars are colored by word count — blue for short (1–8 words), green for medium (9–18), orange for long (19–30), and red for very long (31+). A healthy mix of colors suggests varied prose.
  • Monotony detection: the tool flags runs of three or more consecutive sentences within the same length category, which can indicate repetitive rhythm.

All analysis runs entirely in your browser — nothing is sent to a server.
